A Celta Vigo fan club missed out on a 3.74 million euro football pools payout after their club scored a last-minute equaliser in their 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid on Monday.
The bittersweet goal, the first scored by goal-shy forward Facundo Ferreyra in 459 days, cost the 22-strong Plaza de Compostela fan group an eye-watering 3.5 million.
It did, however, give their side a point in their bid for survival, which could prove invaluable come the end of the season.
Ferreyra’s late strike reduced their prize pot to 170 000 euros in total – a prize of 8 000 each, a far cry from the 176 000 each would have taken home had the goal not been scored.
“Manolo (a group member) and his brother-in-law Cesar picked the games. We had all 15 games lined up before (the goal),” group president Ramiro Lopez told radio station Onda Cero.
“It’s better that we don’t think about the amount that could’ve been won. I bet it was the brother-in-law who messed it up for us!”
